The continuation of her series The Liminal State, The Liminal Gates explores what happens after the transcendence of death. Is it rebirth? Is it nirvana? Is it liberation? Is it extinction? The Tibetan Book of the Dead tells us that there are six states of existence between death and rebirth, what happens after?

In Kristin Schattenfield-Rein’s latest exhibition, she explores this gloaming of what happens after you have moved through the six bardo's of the Liminal State [This Life, Meditation, the Dream, Dying, Dharma & Existence] and pass through The Liminal Gate. Physically the pieces are a blending of natural elements (glass and sand) with unnatural and manmade mediums (paint and epoxy resin) to create a visceral and textural journey through these gates.
The Liminal Gate is pushing further into the realm of death, rebirth & liberation. Exploring what what happens after we die. To Schattenfield-Rein, each step on this jourey requires its own color representation & tactality. The Tibetan Buddhists believe everything we do requires our absolute attention in keeping with that idea each piece had its own intention and focus. In other words, there is no easy way to pass through the liminal gate.
The Liminal Gate includes different representations of these concepts. According to the artist, “The pieces adhere – just barely – to the convention of wall hangings, but they creep past their edges, becoming sculptural and suggestive of something beyond the obvious. The work is layer upon layer of varying materials adding and subtracting until a moment of grace is achieved.”
